GRADUATE INTERVIEWS

Within days of the Barra Basics introductory release, our grads stated raving about how the course totally changed the way they fish for barra. We decided to document their stories through a collection of interviews. Here is what some of them had to say...

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

When I first saw and read about the Barra Basics course and not being from the Townsville region I had heard about Ryan being an excellent guide, but wasn’t sure how he could possibly put all his experience and knowledge into any kind of a training course let alone an online web based program. Then the next question I had was how do you put a price on that training package? Well most of my questions were answered in the first instance by reading the web info and communicating directly with Karen and Ryan prior to signing up. Then once Id joined and went through the course content and support setup I was totally convinced that I had made the right decision and am still amazed at how well and user friendly the course is structured and how much extra information I pick up every time I go back to refresh my mind on individual subjects.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

Being in my 50’s I’m pretty set in my ways and thought I knew a fair bit about how, when and where to fish for Barramundi so I expected to struggle with taking on new information from an unfamiliar source. But this course has helped me target Barra in a totally different way than I have in the past, which was pretty much reliant on a few days each month, in a few specific locations if time permitted. Now using the knowledge  I’ve gained from the course and using Ryan’s framework I can plan as far in advance as I want for any location, local or elsewhere or make a decision about where my best opportunity will be to catch a Barra the night before I go. Having a strategy prior to hitting the water and sticking to it has made a vast difference to my results too, I now find my self preparing for a couple of different locations and methods on each outing rather than a just single idea no matter what.

This has increased my catch rate, allowed me to chase both large and small fish and saved me wasting time in the wrong locations targeting Barra in the wrong way.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

The things that’s stands out most for me from the Barra Basics course is how it takes a lot of guess work out of the game by teaching the art of strategy and planning each outing with confidence, knowing your using 30 years of an expert guides experience as a basis to build your own fishing style around.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

I would and have recommended the course to people I believe have the passion I have to learn about the finer art of Barra fishing, the environment they live in and to become better and smarter environmentally aware fisherperson.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

I really like the idea that once you join the course you also get connected to like-minded people via the closed group Facebook page and that all the course content is continually updated and available to members 24/7. As my parents taught me, be inquisitive; Ask, Listen, Look and Learn that’s how to enjoy you life.

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

I initially hesitated at the cost of the course as it was alot of money to outlay (I bit the bullet and decided to go without any new gear for a while instead and invested in this awesome course). I thought about how much I will use it and what I will gain and boy I didn't expect to gain as much as I did.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

Its all about the framework...  Framework, Framework, Framework, Framework... I'm sure you get the picture as it is your framework. Previously I use to go out fishing with no plan of attack. Now when I go out I have a word document I complete each time, it includes tides, the framework and how I anticipate to fish incoming & out going small, medium and large tides. Helps to focus on what I want to do.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

I think I have answered this already but just incase you missed it THE FRAMEWORK 🙂

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

I have told so many people about it. I will be revisiting the course in the next 2 weeks to refresh my memory and try and understand some new bits as there were plenty of things I didn't understand/remember. Need to write me some good notes. So in short I'd highly recommend the course especially for amateur fishos like myself.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

Hats off to Ryan as this course is awesome. I especially like the Facebook page and Ryan's assistance on this page. Greatly appreciated. There are a few things in the course that are expected knowledge I.e. rock bar, I don't know what these are and need to research what they are. I find the hardest part is understanding my sounder so have had to put a lot of time in understanding it and what I am looking at. Thanks for all the help and support.

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

Slight hesitation was the cost. But knowing the content was well worth the money, there was no way I was going to miss out on it.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

I've found I think a lot more about my fishing trip, months / weeks / days in advance, and come up with a number of plans for that particular day. I generally have a good strategy depending on the tide sizes and tide period, in conjunction with Ryan's framework. But the main change I've noticed, is I catch more Barra, and consistently!

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

It's hard to single out any specific feature or module as every aspect I thought was great, and equally important.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

Yes. Because you catch more Barra!

Stephen Booth

I studied environmental management and majored in freshwater ecology and coastal geomorphology and believed I had a reasonably good understanding of fish and their behaviours. But nothing compares to on the water experience and Ryan has this in bucket loads. From the very first seminar you are learning. And not just learning bits and pieces, you are learning so much that anyone will come out of this a better barramundi angler. From topics as diverse as habits and habitats, feeding and weather, Ryan sets out in plain English how you can use this to your advantage. The best part for me was that Ryan does not talk down to the people participating. He gives his knowledge to you in an easily digestible format that you can literally take to the water with you.

The Barra Basics eCourse has given a much greater understanding of the great barramundi, and it has also given me a broader knowledge base to compare other species with. I would recommend the Barra Basics eCourse to anyone who has a love of barra fishing or who wants to go barra fishing. Novice to expert alike will have their skill set upgraded – guaranteed.

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

The cost of the course was a bit of an outlay but once I talked myself into it I realized that it was probably the cheapest fishing tool I have bought. I was also worried that I would not have this course to go back and review but I now know I can.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

I’ve been fishing for Barra for the last 15 years and now know that most of the time I was fishing in the wrong place at the wrong time and the fish I was catching was pretty much luck. Havn’t had much of a chance to get out much since looking at the course but will be putting in a big effort for this season.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

The ease of viewing it. Better that page after page of reading. Also the excellent examples to view.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

Yes. Most of my mates also fish in the wrong place. When I have to go in a mates boat and not mine they want to take me to the Wrong place also. Tired of explaining to them where to go and sounding like a know all. LOL

Jeff Titmarsh | Mackay

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

I had no real hesitations about signing up for the course. Some of my friends thought it was a bit strange since I already do fairly well but I know I really only have one main fishing tactic and that is to plan my fishing around an early morning low tide and lure fish flats, gutters, certain banks and more recently some rocky areas. The course has given me many more options and ideas so I'm looking forward to giving them a go.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

It hasn't happened yet but I intend on doing some live bait fishing. I'm hoping to catch a bigger class of fish once I get on top of collecting bait at high tide and I've narrowed down some fishing spots. I have a few spots in mind for both that I'm hoping will pay off. We'll see how I go and I guess for me that's the really interesting thing about fishing.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

For me the number one thing I liked most was your barramundi framework. Also bait collecting tips at high tide and the fish funnelling information was great.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

Yes I would recommend your course to anyone. I do a fair amount of fishing and do quite well from time to time but I think this has joined the dots for me. I imagine if you were new to fishing this would take years of trail and error out of the equation.

Brett Ford (Townsville)

I personally can’t thank you guys enough not just from me but from our family as well. We have always loved the outdoors and now that I finally went out and purchased a boat for the first time I attribute this new confidence I have from the whole aspect of this course to plan my holiday destinations with tools I have learnt from this course. Most importantly the years of knowledge wrapped up in this course can now be shared with my kids which with my work load I would never of been able to do. Thanks a million Team Moody.

Brett Ford (Townsville), Barra Basics Graduate

Q. Where are Barra Basics students catching barra?

A. The framework works EVERYWHERE!

(Except Antarctica and other such places barra are not found)

Stan Skeates | Brisbane

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

I had some reservations about the cost. But I feel that the content was right up to the mark and I have no regrets, also I am unable to target Barra on a regular basis thus limited chance to put theory into practice.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

The Bimini twist I now use as per your video, has definitely added to the security of my leader knots. Building a new Rebel tinny next month will use your set up ideas as I have seen how they work.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

I really liked the 3 modules (3 4 and 5) target areas and what to look for, I was able to use some of this on a trip to the west [Kimberleys], when Barra were not playing in the usual places for them.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

I have and I will continue to do so. The information is spot on and cuts down a lot of half-truths for us amateurs.

Brett Ford | Townsville

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

None at all. After my 1st Barra Charter I just knew there was something special here.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

Passion and a new love of fishing…Right place Right tools Right Time…Simple but effective.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

Hard to pin point one specific module, I know my son has enjoyed the knot tying video he has probably gone through 1 km of line practicing.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

110% Valuable. Knowledge that money can’t buy unless you have a spare 30 years on the water.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

I wish I had more time on the water, but this knowledge is now with me and my family for life, lures – sounders – boats etc. may change like the weather but the basic’s wont.

Jeff Skinner | Cairns

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

You have heard it so many times, but my only hesitation was the cost. I don't earn big money and don't have a lot of spare cash, and with a baby due in May it would have been a huge investment. Also, the amount of time I actually get to spend on the water is limited, so would it be worth the cost? I don't have a boat, and I usually travel back to Ingham to fish with my old man once a month (at the very most, more likely less. After considering all this, I still decided to invest in the course because I saw it as an investment for myself, as well as teaching my old man new ideas, and also looked into the future as an investment for my children in the future. Of course, the price being discounted for the first place Intake was a big incentive. If I learn something and improve my fishing knowledge and possibly results, all my family will enjoy their time on the water more, and have the passion for fishing like I do. But teaching dad new ways of thinking is hard haha. We already enjoy our time on the water together. It's quite common for us to start with a full esky and go home with an empty one (plus the empty stubbies) . We have never targeted barra (basically because we weren't confident) so this is new to both of us.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

Changes so far have mainly been learn or perfecting some of my knot tying, and trying to learn to read my sounder better. Invested in a humminbird 798 side scanner just over a year ago, and due to the amount of time I actually get on the water it has been a slow process learning to read it. Also when I get the chance to be on the water, I just try and look at my surroundings differently and how tidal run impacts on certain areas. It'll be very slow for me, but it's a lifelong tutorial as far I see it..

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

Loved all of it. Watch it over and over. The in field videos are great. So is the dog : )

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

Yes if you're serious about improving yourself and learning new things. No if you just wants 'secrets' or use this new learned knowledge to abuse the fishery and take more than you need. I really hope the right people access this course; to improve the enjoyment in their hobbies, not to improve their ego.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

Add to the course - no. Only thing that annoyed me a little was where some parts of some of the infield videos in the course were posted on the emails to your followers. (E.g. High tide bait location areas). They are only small parts of the video of course, but we've paid good money for this 'exclusive content', and then it's available to all your email subscribers. However, I do see what you are trying to achieve with everything you do with the course and your educational videos for your email subscribers, so I don't lose any sleep over it. And it is good to help some of those people in some way who really can't afford the course, so good on you.

Andrew Rae | Hervey Bay

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

The only hesitation about signing up was the cost, but in saying that I would like to say that it’s worth it. To gain information from someone's experience should come at a cost, I don’t work to wear out my old clothes so why should I get something from some ones hard work for nothing.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

I found I’m now targeting specific areas during a certain tide instead of trying to fish them all at once and avoiding others till the time is right. This not only helped with barra but also other species i.e.. jack, threadies and mulloway. I manage a caravan park here at Hervey Bay so my fishing time are a bit sparse at the moment but I’m retiring at the end of the month so I’m looking forward to more fishing, the barra fishing is quite good here at times during the warmer months but it almost shuts down during colder times but mesh fisherman make it very hard by taking a lot of big breeders.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

The module showing what specific areas to fish during certain tides was the most interesting to me and my style of fishing, mainly using artificials but it did stir some interest in me to start using live bait, but I like the challenge in using lures and sometimes it gets personal like knowing there is a fish in a particular snag and getting it to bite is a bit of a turn on for me.

All the modules were good for me and I did learn a lot from them like the habits of some bait fish for example.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

I definitely would recommend the course to others but some things are a bit hard to assimilate to this Hervey Bay, Mary river area. I have told quite few others here about the course but the main concern I get from them is the cost as there isn’t a lot of money in this area and a lot of people are doing it a bit tough at the moment.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

The hardest thing for me is getting my head around what makes the difference between the medium and biggest and smaller tides. The difference between the biggest and smallest is obvious but when does the medium start and finish is a problem for me.

POSTSCRIPT: We have added an additional demo video to address these concerns.

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

I'm really enjoying the course. l am not sure if you can see how much I look at it, but my wife thinks it's an obsession. I think it's just getting value for money.  My biggest hesitation about signing up for the course was cost. I thought it was expensive for not receiving any physical item. Now I think you have priced the course well, it is expensive enough that not "everyone" will join. Honestly I would now be very disappointed if you dropped the price.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

The biggest difference I have seen in my fishing is confidence, I am now able to persist at 1 technique for longer without thinking maybe I'm doing the wrong thing. This has allowed me to Enjoy my fishing more, and catch more fish.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

I have really enjoyed the whole course, there is something to take away from all the different modules. The video examples are very easy to follow and Facebook page covers enough questions to apply to your own area.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

I wouldn't recommend Barra Basics, as I am a selfish prick!  The fewer people workout the areas I fish the better. Honestly if anyone asked me Barra Basics I would highly recommend it.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

There is nothing else I would want included in the course, there is more than enough information in the course to "work it out". I feel if people just want it handed to them they should go with a good guide ( you could recommend someone). Thanks for the course. I wouldn't want my name put to any comments.

Shane Flynn | Townsville

WHAT HESITATIONS DID YOU HAVE ABOUT SIGNING UP FOR BARRA BASICS?

My only hesitation was the money, but when I sat down and added up what I have spent over the years it left me with no doubt at all.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED IN YOUR FISHING SINCE UNDERTAKING THE COURSE?

Since the course my entire focus on barra fishing has changed. I now catch bait where once I drove straight past and am now much more methodical in my approach. I get bait here at a certain time then go live baitng there and at low tide if I’m still keen I flick lures somewhere else.

WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES/MODULE DID YOU LIKE BEST WHEN DOING THE COURSE?

There wasn’t a particular module that I thought was better than others but the combination that added up to an all round package.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BARRA BASICS - WHY OR WHY NOT?

I would definitely recommend it to friends as it is the best investment you can make to increase your whole outlook on barra fishing and funnily enough a good mate and I were working on his boat before Xmas and we got talking about fishing ,as you do, and we both clicked on that we were both doing your course, ha funny. Now we are both sharing our new found knowledge and enjoying fishing more than ever.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

Firstly would like to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed your course. It was very professionally put together ( well done Karen) and for Ryan to share his years of knowledge with us PUNTERS is a once in a life time opportunity (thanks Ryan). I have fished in some form my whole life, from growing up in Bowen fishing around Gloucester and Montes Resort to living in Townsville for the past 40 years, having a hut at Cape Cleveland and fishing many Game Fishing comps from Townsville to Cairns and I have never had anyone share so much knowledge with virtual strangers. It was an absolute privilege so thanks again.
